The Glass On The Microwave

It used to drive me crazy…he would always leave his empty glass on the microwave….always.  I would clean the kitchen, put all the dirty dishes away; and without fail, turn around to find his empty glass on the microwave.  “TYLER, HOW HARD IS IT FOR YOU TO PUT YOUR D#@& GLASS AWAY?!” I had a much different reaction today when I came home from dropping Tyler off at Virginia Tech.  I walked into the kitchen, and there on the microwave, was an empty glass. It’s still there.  I’m not putting it away; not just yet.  I think I miss seeing his guitars all over the house too. And, I may even miss the wet towels on the family room floor.  (Don’t ask why the wet towels were on the family room floor) I was confident I would miss his perspective on things.    I knew I would miss hearing him laugh from the other room as he watched The Colbert Report or Tosh.O.  It was certainly a no-brain- er that I would miss hearing him play his guitar late at night when he should have been doing homework.   But, I really thought I would be relieved that I didn’t have to put his glass away anymore.   I may just keep that glass right where it is.

My heart just broke a little for you. I have a picture frame with a very special picture that my son kissed the glass of when he was younger and had sticky lips from a lollipop. I NEVER cleaned the glass. It makes me remember his chubby hands holding the frame and the way he closed his eyes when he kissed the picture. I would tape the glass there and fill it with some pebbles, sand or just leave it empty. Ironic how an empty glass can make us feel the same way. Thanks for sharing.

I can still remember those chubby cheeks and him in the red cowboy hat at the pumpkin patch. What a wonderful man he has become. So glad we could experience the time in Costa Rica with him. Though the glass is empty our hearts are FULL of love, laughter and memories of Tyler (with many more to come!)
    Love, Lori

Thank you for sharing – I’m appreciating my dirty kitchen (that really WAS clean a minute ago) a little more. And by the way, could you pass the tissues please?????
